Thanks to those who attended our
recent puppetshow, From the Mouth of the River, about
human impact on aquatic animals, May 12th, at the Mum
Puppettheatre. The show included three distinct puppetshows,
woven together by author and musician Jim Harris, Co-founder
of Public Eye. Kawani, Spirit of the Water, shared
stories from her world beneath the sea. Stories included "The
Great Auk" by Renaissance Artist Puppet Company
about the extinction of the auk, "The Under World" by
The Skekses featuring a mobster who faces drowning
in the Schuylkill River unless he agrees to help stop
global warming, overfishing and pollution, and "Not
in MY Backyard!" by Alisa Sickora Kleckner & Co.
starring a fish who traverses oceans filled with longlines,
trawlers and drift nets in search of a hospitable place
to live.
Between each puppetshow were short acts including a ballet
dance of two polar bears in love on the melting ice and
fisherman Captain Bill catching a tiny, toxic fish named
Red. Kawani, Captain Bill and Red were teachers and guides,
showing both sides of the problems affecting aquatic
animals. In the final scene, Kawani called a tribal council
to hear the grievances of the animal tribes and the human
tribe was invited to come up with solutions. After the
show, kids received information, signed petitions and
mailed letters to help save the oceans and aquatic animals.
Special thanks to Mobilization for Animals PA and The
Culture and Animals Foundation, who funded this project.
We deeply appreciate the talent and enthusiasm of the
entire cast, crew and volunteers who helped make this
show a success!
